When your child is sick, it is most important to help him or her feel as comfortable as possible, along with providing top-notch care. Slidell Memorial Hospital operates a Pediatric Patient Care Unit (PPCU) designed for those children who require a hospital stay in a non-critical setting. The Pediatric unit is on the second floor of the hospital and contains eight all-private beds.
The Pediatric Unit provides multidisciplinary care for infants, children and teenage patients with respiratory, gastrointestinal and infectious diseases as well as recovery from surgery and serious illness, such as pneumonia, RSV or meningitis. Our pediatric care not only includes prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, but also scaled down equipment to fit a child's special needs to make each small patient feel more at ease.
Because research shows that children respond to treatment better and recovery times improve when they feel comfortable and are surrounded by a strong family and social support network, accommodations are made for one parent to spend the night with their child; each patient room has a comfortable fold-out sleeper for a parent to be close to their child.
Care is provided 24 hours a day by a team of highly skilled pediatricians and nurses with a specialized knowledge of pediatric care. All nurses have Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS.)
Pediatric hospitalists (physicians who specialize in hospital care and treatment for children), community pediatricians and pediatric specialists/sub-specialists (e.g., pediatric surgeons, pediatric endocrinologists) work together to provide the best treatment available, all in a caring and warm environment.
