Ion robotic bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that helps doctors reach lung nodules and collect tissue for testing.

The Ion system uses a thin, flexible tube called a catheter. Shape-sensing technology helps the doctor guide the catheter through the airways and toward the lung nodule. The system was designed to help doctors reach small nodules, including those in hard-to-reach areas near the outside of the lungs. 

Before the procedure, information from the patient's CT scan is used to create a 3D map of the lungs and plan a path to the nodule. During the procedure, the doctor uses the Ion system to reach the area and collect a tissue sample for testing.

Sometimes, a CT scan or other imaging test finds a small spot in the lung called a lung nodule. If a nodule looks suspicious, a doctor may recommend more testing. Some lung nodules can be difficult to reach because they are small or located deep in the lung. 

The Ion system is designed to help doctors reach and biopsy nodules in these areas. According to Intuitive, the company that makes Ion, its thin catheter can move through all 18 sections of the lung. Once the doctor reaches the nodule, a small tissue sample can be collected and sent to a lab for testing. The results can help the care team decide what to do next.

The Ion system does not diagnose lung cancer or other lung conditions on its own. It helps the doctor reach the nodule and collect tissue that can be tested.

Not every lung nodule needs a biopsy, and Ion robotic bronchoscopy may not be right for every patient. A pulmonologist can review the patient's scans and medical history to decide the best next step.
