‘A Day for Girls’ Health’ in Slidell on Feb. 28

Learning how to make responsible and healthy choices is a lesson teens must learn to build successful adulthoods. Making those lessons fun and memorable is the motivation behind the annual special fair just for teen girls in the community: A Day for Girls' Health.

The event will be held on Feb. 28 from 1 – 5 p.m. in the SMH Regional Cancer Center, located at 1120 Robert Blvd. in Slidell. Girls in junior and senior high school will take part in important education on women's health issues, self-esteem building sessions, advice on grooming and a variety of information booths, among other attractions.

A Day for Girls' Health is a partnership of the Slidell Memorial Hospital Parenting Center and Junior Auxiliary of Slidell. Sponsors are the Slidell Memorial Foundation and Camellia City OB/GYN. Now in its fifth year, the program is a national award-winning community project and modeled at other southern cities by Junior Auxiliary.

Girls will take part in educational #LetsChats with older teen girls to guide them to make their junior and senior high school days positive; visit information booths provided by business and community groups; and, take in a fashion show – all designed to give them a positive look at inner and outer beauty as well as tools for a safe and healthy future. Door prizes, free giveaways and beauty treats will be available.

Parents have the chance to participate in "Know Your Child,” an education and awareness program for parents of teenagers to learn how to recognize the early warning signs of depression, suicide, drug/alcohol abuse, and other behavioral issues.

Other activities during the fair will include: Line Dancing and Body Movement by CrossGates Family Fitness; Salmen Culinary Arts Cooking Demos, food booth by local restaurants; and, a fashion show by JoAnn Chelchowski.
