SMH offers community health programs in April

Slidell Memorial Hospital will present the following community education and support programs in April.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Girl Talk: For pre-teen and teen girls, Girl Talk explains the physical, social, emotional changes your teen will undergo during her puberty years. Physicians will answer questions about what your teen is experiencing. Teens must be accompanied by an adult. To register, call (985) 280-2657 or visit SlidellMemorial.org.

Fee: $10 per family

Heartsaver CPR, AED & First Aid: Ideal for teachers, child-care providers and others who need a certification card, this course teaches the basic techniques of adult and pediatric CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and first aid for choking (all age groups, from infant to adult).

When: Wed., Apr. 15, 9:30 a.m.- 1 p.m.

PRENATAL and PARENTING

Me & My Tot Time: Come and meet other parents/grandparents and their little ones at our weekly support/playgroups. SMH staff provides a learning and support opportunity for parents and a social playtime for children.Parents discuss child development issues and parenting tips, while their children enjoy playtime with other little ones. 9:30-10:30 a.m. Walking – 30 months

11 a.m. – Noon 31 months to pre-school

Baby & Me – Tot Time: Join other parents of birth to pre-walking infants for child development discussions and support. This ongoing support group focuses on sharing issues and insights about parenting your baby. Registration is not required. Baby Love Class Express: D esigned for all expectant couples, it covers the entire list of topics in Baby Love Classes One – Three. Participants are encouraged to eat before coming to this class and to bring a pillow for seating comfort. Class will break for one hour for lunch on your own. Breastfeeding Clinic: Lactation Consultants offer support and encouragement as they discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started, how to prevent problems, common concerns and what to expect in the first few weeks. To register, call (985) 280-8585 or visit SlidellMemorial.org.

Birthing Center Tours: Come tour the Birthing Center on the second Saturday of every month. Tours will begin every half hour at the Birthing Center Waiting Area on the second floor and will include a tour of Labor and Delivery, Nursery, Intensive Care Nursery and a Postpartum Room. Health Conditions

Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group: Provides emotional, educational and social support for caregivers, while helping participants develop methods and skills to solve problems. For more information, please call Audrey Baker at (985) 960-1964.

Ostomy Support Group: Support and information for ostomates and their caregivers.

Diabetes Self-Management Classes: Offered for you and your family to learn about diabetes self-management, nutrition, medication, coping skills and blood sugar monitoring. Instruction by a certified diabetes nurse and dietitian educator. Physician referral required and covered by most insurance plans. Congestive Heart Failure Clinic: Taught by a Cardiac Rehab registered nurse, this clinic covers the disease process and self-management, low sodium diets, weight management, medications and coping skills. Physician referral required. To register, call SMH Cardiac Rehab at (985) 280-8513.

Cancer Programs

Caregiver Coffee Talk: Join us for a cup of freshly brewed coffee with delicious pastries, and meet other caregivers facing similar challenges as you and your family. We will discuss simple antidotes that help you cope with daily stress, and how to care for yourself as a caregiver and restore your own energy.

Look Good, Feel Better: Free make-up kits, step-by-step demonstration, personalized assistance with a licensed cosmetologist, free lunch and great support for women just like you! To register, call (985) 280-2657.

Yoga for Cancer Patients and Caregivers : This class is specifically for cancer patients and their caregivers. There is no charge for the classes, but registration and medical release are required. For more information, please call (985) 280-6600.

Zumba Classes for Cancer Patients and Caregivers : Join other cancer patients and caregivers for this free Latin-inspired, dance-fitness program. This low-impact class will meet monthly. Join the fun!

Women Warriors: a breast cancer group: Whether you are undergoing treatment or in recovery, meeting with others who share a similar experience can benefit you. Support and information for patients, survivors or caregivers. For more information, call (985) 280-6612.

Lymphedema Screening: Find out your risk for lymphedema, a medical condition resulting from surgery or radiation. To register, call (985) 280-2657.

Living with Cancer Support Group: Support group for those living with cancer and their caregivers. If you are unable to make a group in-person, join us for our Living with Cancer Group from the comfort of your own home. Just call (985) 280-8958 at 1 p.m. on group day, and you will automatically be connected to a live support group. You'll be able to connect to other group members as well as a trained facilitator who will offer support through your cancer journey.
