SMH offers community health programs in July

 

(June 19, 2017 – Slidell, La.) Slidell Memorial Hospital will present the following community education and support programs in July.

Special programS

Safe Sitter® 1-day Class: Safe Sitter teaches young teens (11-14) everything they need to know to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Students learn life-saving skills such as how to rescue someone who’s choking, and helpful information like what to do if there’s severe weather. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use CPR mannequins to practice CPR or choking rescue. Registration is required, and class size is limited. Safe Kids 101: For preteens and teens from 9-14 years old, this is a three-hour course teaching how to handle key responsibilities when staying home alone. Stephanie Daniels, LPN, will cover these topics with attendees: basic first-aid skills; digital and cooking safety; and, how to handle unfamiliar scenarios. PRENATAL and PARENTING

Me & My Tot Time: Come and meet other parents/grandparents and their little ones at our weekly support/playgroups. SMH staff provides a learning and support opportunity for parents and a social playtime for children. Parents discuss child development issues and parenting tips, while their children enjoy playtime with other little ones. Baby & Me Time: Join other parents of birth to pre-walking infants for child development discussions and support. This ongoing support group focuses on sharing issues and insights about parenting your baby. Registration is not required. Big Brother, Big Sister: This is a special class for children, ages 3 – 10, to learn safe ways to interact and care for their family’s new baby, practice diapering, make a special gift for the new baby and tour the SMH Birthing Center. Girl Talk: For girls aged 9-13, Girl Talk explains the physical, social and emotional changes your teen will undergo during her puberty years. Physicians Alice LeBreton, M.D., Pediatrics, and Deborah Hilton, M.D., Dermatology, will answer questions about what your teen is experiencing. Teens must be accompanied by an adult. Breastfeeding Clinic: Lactation Consultants offer support and encouragement as they discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started, how to prevent problems, common concerns and what to expect in the first few weeks. To register, call (985) 280-8585 or visit SlidellMemorial.org.

Baby and Me Tobacco Free: SMH is now hosting these smoking cessation programs on Mondays and Wednesdays by appointment. The program encourages expecting mothers to quit smoking during their pregnancy and to stay smoke-free after their baby is born. Mothers meeting all program requirements will receive monthly vouchers for six months of free diapers. Also sponsored by Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, March of Dimes and AmeriHealth Cartas Louisiana. Cancer Programs

Look Good, Feel Better: Free make-up kits, step-by-step demonstration, personalized assistance with a licensed cosmetologist, free lunch and great support for women just like you! To register, call (985) 280-2657.

Yoga for Cancer Patients and Caregivers: This class is specifically for cancer patients and their caregivers. There is no charge for the classes, but registration and medical release are required. For more information, call Patricia at (985) 707-4961.

Caregiver Coffee Talk: Join us for a cup of freshly brewed coffee with delicious pastries, and meet other caregivers facing similar challenges as you and your family. Living with Cancer Support Group: Support group for those living with cancer and their caregivers. If you are unable to make a group in-person, join us for our Living with Cancer Group from the comfort of your own home. Just call (985) 280-8958 at 1 p.m. on group day, and you will automatically be connected to a live support group. You’ll be able to connect to other group members as well as a trained facilitator who will offer support through your cancer journey.

Other

Mall Walkers: Mall Walkers is a partnership between SMH and North Shore Square to help improve the community’s health by encouraging people to walk inside the mall. The mall opens at 7 a.m. for early walkers and stays open until 9 p.m. for after-hours walkers. North Shore Square provides security, air-conditioning and water fountains to make walking so much easier. For more information, call (985) 280-8529.
