SMH offers community health programs in October

Slidell Memorial Hospital will present the following community education and support programs in October.

Special programS

Big Brother, Big Sister: This is a special class for children, ages 3 – 10, to learn safe ways to interact and care for their family’s new baby, practice diapering, make a special gift for the new baby and tour the SMH Birthing Center. Parents also receive tips on preparing their children for their new family addition. To register, call (985) 280-2657 or visit SlidellMemorial.org.

Women’s Health Alliance Fall Seminar: With a focus on breast cancer awareness, the 2016 Women’s Health Alliance Fall Seminar will also feature health screenings followed by lunch, guest speakers Leah Chase and Monica Pierre, and a fashion show. Each year, about 400 women and men attend so be sure to put this event on your calendar and get your tickets before they sell out. For more information or to register, call (985)-280-8529.

PRENATAL and PARENTING

Me & My Tot Time: Come and meet other parents/grandparents and their little ones at our weekly support/playgroups. SMH staff provides a learning and support opportunity for parents and a social playtime for children. Parents discuss child development issues and parenting tips, while their children enjoy playtime with other little ones. Baby & Me Time: Join other parents of birth to pre-walking infants for child development discussions and support. This ongoing support group focuses on sharing issues and insights about parenting your baby. Registration is not required. Maternity Fair and Birthing Center Tours: Come tour the facilities to see all SMH has to offer in its Maternal Child Wing and then visit with baby- and mother-friendly vendors. Registration is required for tours by calling (985) 280-2657.

When: Saturday, Oct. 8, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Place: SMH Birthing Center Waiting Area, 2nd Floor, 1001 Gause Blvd. (Use Florida Avenue Entrance)

 

Lamaze:  This five-session course teaches Lamaze techniques for coping with pain during labor, six steps to a safer birth, stages of labor and the role of the labor support person. Dress comfortably, bring a mat or blanket and two pillows to practice floor exercises. Two sessions begin this month. To register, call (985) 280-2657 or visit SlidellMemorial.org.

Breastfeeding Clinic: Lactation Consultants offer support and encouragement as they discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started, how to prevent problems, common concerns and what to expect in the first few weeks. To register, call (985) 280-8585 or visit SlidellMemorial.org.

Breastfeeding & Beyond: Please join in on this mother-to-mother support group that includes an informal discussion led by an SMH lactation consultant. Moms and babies, as well as pregnant moms, are welcome (no dads, please!). Light snacks will be available. Registration is not required. Please call (985) 280-8663 for more information.

Baby and Me Tobacco Free: SMH is now hosting these smoking cessation programs on Mondays and Wednesdays by appointment. The program encourages expecting mothers to quit smoking during their pregnancy and to stay smoke-free after their baby is born. Mothers meeting all program requirements will receive monthly vouchers for six months of free diapers. Also sponsored by Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, March of Dimes and AmeriHealth Cartas Louisiana. Cancer Programs

Yoga for Cancer Patients and Caregivers: This class is specifically for cancer patients and their caregivers. There is no charge for the classes, but registration and medical release are required. For more information, please call (985) 280-6600.

Caregiver Coffee Talk: Join us for a cup of freshly brewed coffee with delicious pastries, and meet other caregivers facing similar challenges as you and your family. Women Warriors: a cancer group: Whether you are undergoing treatment or in recovery, meeting with others who share a similar experience can benefit you. Support and information for patients, survivors or caregivers. For more information, call (985) 280-6611.

Living with Cancer Support Group: Support group for those living with cancer and their caregivers. If you are unable to make a group in-person, join us for our Living with Cancer Group from the comfort of your own home. Just call (985) 280-8958 at 1 p.m. on group day, and you will automatically be connected to a live support group. You’ll be able to connect to other group members as well as a trained facilitator who will offer support through your cancer journey.
