Cancer Services
At Slidell Memorial Hospital, treating illnesses is what we do best. And, treating cancer is a true specialty--we have been a leader in cancer treatment technology for years. SMH combines the expertise of an outstanding staff of specialists and nurses with the most advanced treatment and technology to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients. SMH's new regional comprehensive cancer center houses all of our outpatient cancer services and technology--as well as additional services and equipment--under one roof.

SMH's Oncology Program has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons as offering the very best in cancer care, earning a commendation and designation as a Community Cancer Center Program. COC-approved cancer programs represent fewer than 25% of all hospitals. The designation assures patients they are receiving comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment; a multi-specialty team approach; information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; and access to cancer-related information, education and support.

Technology

SMH has invested millions in cutting-edge technology to bring the most advanced radiation therapy available to our patients. The hospital's radiation oncology staff began using a High Dose Rate Brachytherapy system to treat cancer from the inside-out. This high intensity treatment, also known as "implant radiation," is available in few other hospitals in our region and delivers radiation through a small catheter directly into the tumor site.

And the hospital's Varian IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy) system is used in both radiosurgery and radiation treatment that is able to target tumors more precisely while sparing healthy tissue. SMH is one of just 70 hospitals worldwide to introduce RapidArc Radiotherapy Technology using a Trilogy® linear accelerator by Varian Medical Systems outfitted with an On-Board Imager® KV imaging system. The linear accelerator rotates around the patient to deliver the treatments from nearly any angle, accelerating delivery by 6 to 8 times the regular delivery rate for traditional image-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

Diagnostic Equipment

In addition to CT and MRI imaging, SMH has increased diagnostic capabilities through the introduction of Breast MRI and PET/CT scan services. A PET/CT scan provides unique information about the activity in cancer cells that enables easier detection of cancer and shows the response to given treatment, thereby allowing the cancer specialist the most optimal treatment for a given patient. This non-invasive procedure is especially useful in detecting certain kinds of common cancers, such as lung, breast, colon, ovary, head/neck and melanomas.
